Terms and conditions apply Pt 1 The disciples and all those who followed had had a easy ride up until now, in v34 Jesus gives them a update as to what it means to follow Christ. They were told that they would suffer and die for his sake as his followers.

The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart. People are the common factor in all of these problems, even if we lives in isolation, the evil would be with us as we have these sinful leanings regardless of where we are.
